WHO WAS KILLED IN CONCORD FIGHT
APRIL 19TH, 1775,
IN YE DEFENCE OF YE JUST RIGHTS OF HIS COUNTRY,
BEING IN THE 21ST YEAR OF HIS AGE.
Pvt. Abner Hosmer
Abner Hosmer was born at Acton on August 21, 1754 and was the third son of Jonathan and Martha (Conant) Hosmer. He is not listed in Coburn's (1912) muster roll but was a Private in Captain Isaac Davis' Acton Minute Men company and was present and killed, with Davis, in the first volley fired by the British regulars at the North Bridge in Concord on April 19,1775.1
Captain Isaac Davis, Abner Hosmer, and James Hayward, the third Acton man killed in the battle, initially were buried in the old burying ground (now the Woodlawn Cemetery). On October 29, 1851, as part of the dedication of the Acton monument, their bones were removed from the cemetery, placed in a compartmented casket, and reinterred on the Town Common. It was noted at that time that Hosmer had suffered a fatal wound to the head.
Hosmer (1928) writes that Abner Hosmer was a drummer and also carried a musket, and he has been described as a "drummer boy" in several histories of the American Revolution, thereby evoking the image of the young drummer boy in Archibald Willard's painting The Spirit of '76. However, Abner Hosmer was nearly 21 years old in April 1775 and was a fully armed and equipped minute man. Although he may also have served as:a drummer, Francis Barker, the company's drummer, was present on the field that morning (Coburn, 1912; Fischer, 1994) .
