This stone is erected to preserve the remembrance of Deacon Samuel Hayward
and remind the living that they must follow him.
He died March 6, 1791, aged 78.
For many years he commanded the militia in this town. He was a kind husband and father,
neighbor and lover of his country, of good men, of religion and of the poor.
T he memory of such a man is blessed.
Herbert Nelson Hayward of Rowley and Watertown, Mass complied a genealogy of his family in 1889. (page 109 G Hay 1120) This handwritten bound volume. Samuel Hayward left Concord between 1734 and 1739 and settled in west village of Acton, Mass.
Family tradition says "When he came to Acton, he pitched his tent by a large rock that was on the (place) in West Acton since known as the "Leeland place" built there and raised up his family."
Styled "gentleman" in Probate records at Cambridge - Ensign previous to 1750 -- a Capt. by 1758 or earlier in the company known then as "Acton Minute Men" of the Colonial Army - Chosen by town of Acton Dec.1774 as one of seven of Committee to see that the inhabitants of the town of Acton do sign their compliance to the association of the Continental Congress and return the names or those persons, that refuse to sign, to the Committee of Correspondence. All the males to sign above age 16 yrs."
He was one of five chosen by town of Acton, Oct.1774, on a Committee of Correspondence; Chosen Dec. 21, 1772 as one of a Committee of nine in Acton to consider the state of the rights of the colonists and the violation of said rights and report a draft of such votes as they shall think proper; elected one of three Deacons of First Parish Church in Acton Sept. 29,1775 (2d lot of deacons appointed); chosen May 14, 1776 one of five on Committee in Acton to take advice of the Pres. of the college and the neighboring ministers that
were voted by town to have invited to preach from Sabbaths on probation." '
Elected one of board of Selectmen and Assessors 1756-1757 and also to office of Town Clerk.
He owned besides a "Homestead Estate, in the town of Mason in the State of 'New Hampshire

Town Meeting July 21, 1735
Pursuant of the instructions of the General Court, Mr. John Heald called a preliminary meeting of the citizens on July 21, 1735. The following is a copy of the minutes:
By virtue of this order above ritten the sd John Heald Did assemble the Inhabitants of the Town of Acton on the twenty first Day of July 1735 and then Proseded as followeth
Leut. John Heald was chosen moderator of the meeting, Thomas Wheeler was chosen Town Clerk and was sworn before Colon'l Flint Esqr. Leut. John Heald and Joseph Fletcher and Thomas Wheeler was chosen Selectmen and assessors and was sworn before Colon'l Flint Esqr. They made choice of Jonathan Wheeler and Amos Prescott Constables with John Barker town Treasurer, surveyors of Highways Jonathan Parlin, John Cragon and Sam'l Hayward Each of which was sworn, surveyor of hemp and flax for that year Simon Hunt, tything man John Brooks, fence viewers and Drovers David Procter and Jonathan Hosmer, Hogreeves Jonathan Billing, Daniell Shepard and Joseph Wheeler. Each as sworn as the law directs.

Notes for JAMES HAYWARD:
A Member of Capt. Davis's Company April 19,1775 and was killed in the Battle of Lexington in the afternoon of that day. The ball from the British solider's gun which caused James Hayward's death, first passed through his powder horn, which is now in the possession of Acton Public Library.
