STEPHEN SHEPARD (Daniel,3 Daniel,2 Johnl), born presumably at Acton, Mass., about 1750, died at Phillips town, Mass., 4 July 1831, aged 81; married at Concord, Mass., 29 Aug. 1786, Prudence Adams, born at Acton 24 July 1757, died at Phillipstown 5 Jan. 1847, aged 89 yrs. 5 mos., daughter of John and Mercy Adams.
He had considerable service in the Revolutionary War. As Stephen Shepherd of Acton, he responded to the Lexington Alarm, 19 Apr. 1775, in the militia Co. of Capt. John Hayward; and enlisted 24 Apr. 1775 as Corporal in Capt. William Smith's Co., Col. John Nixon's Regt., in service 3 months 15 days. He enlisted 25 Mar. 1777 as Stephen Shepard (the name is also rendered Sheppard) for three years or the war; on II Jan. 1781 he was described as aged 30, stature 5 ft. 9 in.; complexion and hair, light; occupation, shoemaker; birthplace and residence, Acton. His service was as Corporal and Sergeant, and he was named as Quartermaster Sergeant late in the war. He was still in service in 1782, and on 21 Jan. of that year had leave to go from West Point to Acton for 55 days and overstayed the leave. He was entitled, however, to two stripes in a list of men entitled to honorary badges for faithful service. [Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution) 14: II8-19, 127, 129-30, q. v.]
He was a pensioner, but his file was not available when the Shepard files were examined for the editor in 1965.
Stephen Shepherd was listed at Acton in the 1790 Census, with one male under 16 years and four females.
