Pvt. Joseph Chaffin
Joseph Chaffin was born September 30,1753 and died June 25, 1836, Acton, Mass. and was the son of Robert and Hannah Powers Chaffin. In 1774 his name appears on Capt. Joseph Robbins list of Acton Minutemen. He was a member of Capt. Isaac Davis Company on April 19, 1775 and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, he also to serve as a private in Capt. Simon Hunt Company during the Revolutionary War. At the age of 83, Joseph was one of the five survivors from Capt. Isaac Davis Company to be present at the July 21, 1835 Acton Centennial Celebration. Joseph married Hesabath Davis in 1784; they had two children both of which died very young. He lived on the land that was part of his father-in-law estate, John Davis and his house was located on the corner of Main St and Great Road. Joseph was a carpenter and a cooper.
In 1898 at the dedication of Capt. Simon Hunt's House and the “Liberty Tree” the powder horn that was used by Joseph Chaffin at the battle of Bunker Hill and in several others battles of the revolution, engraved by him as follows. `For peace and Liberty am I, Joseph Chaffin, may the 12, 1775'; some timbers from Fanuel Hall and from the roofs of the Old South Church; also a gun carried by Capt. Silas Taylor of Stow in the Battle of Bennington, Aug.16, 1777; also Stephen Hosmer's sword used in the Revolution were hung from the Liberty Tree.

John Nixon's (5th) regt.; receipt for advance pay dated Cambridge, June 16, 1775; also, muster roll dated Aug. 1, 1775; enlisted April 24, 1775; service, 3 mos. 15 days; also, company return dated Sept. 30, 1775; reported on command as carpenter; also, Capt. Israel Head's co., Col. Eleazer Brooks's regt.; marched from Acton to Roxbury March 4, 1776; service, 6 days; also, Col. John Buttrick's co. of volunteers, Col. Reed's regt.; enlisted Sept. 28, 1777; discharged Nov. 7, 1777; service, 1 mo. 11 days, at the taking of Gen. Burgoyne; company detached from Col. Brooks's regt. to reinforce Gen. Gates at the Northward.
